On 10th September, 1917, the 7th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 190 Brigade, 63rd Division moved into the front line in the Oppy-Gavrelle sector near Arras. On the following day they had to contend with slight trench mortar activity which increased at dusk while work was undertaken in strengthening the trenches and digging a new one in Oppy Wood. At some stage during the day George Newsom was killed but the battalion diary has no information on this.
